Legitimate online colleges and universities are well aware that the industry is full of crooks and scam artists.

These legitimate institutions know, just like you do, that there are those diploma mills out there that print up diplomas for a price with no real education behind them.

Because the legitimate online colleges and universities know these things, they all go to great lengths to let you know that they are fully accredited online colleges and universities and not just a fly-by-night diploma mill that will take you money in exchange for a worthless piece of paper.

The online colleges and universities that are an extension of real-world colleges and universities are always a safe bet, but they aren't the only ones.

Online colleges and universities will say upfront that they are fully accredited. If you do not see that statement on their website in plain view, you should probably keep looking.

On many online college and university sites, you will find testimonials that have been written by others who have attended classes and gotten degrees from the institutions.

These can help you validate a school's value, but you should remember that anybody can write a testimonial, and just because it says it was written by a successful former student doesn't mean that it really was.

Check with the businesses that you hope to work for once you get your degree. Simply ask, preferably by snail mail, how they value a diploma obtained at the online university that you are considering.

You can take their word for it. They are the people who will be hiring you -- you hope.

In your written inquiry to your potential employers, ask if they recommend or accept one online diploma over others.

This is probably the surest way of determining is an online college or university can provide you with the education and the diploma that will open the right doors for you.
